On the A&R front, the big news of course was the hiring of former EMI A&R Executive Nick Gatfield as President of Sony UK. Other UK news includes the exit of Ellie Giles from Fiction while Gary Harris joins Fiction. Here in the US, both G. Roberson, Exec. VP and Jean Nelson, VP, A&R-Urban exit Atlantic. And of course the really big news was the move of Lucian Grainge to the Chairman/CEO post at Universal and the move of Doug Morris from Universal to Sony. We’re also hearing that Island Def Jam Chairman Antonio L.A. Reid is in talks with Universal for a new music venture and possibly stepping down from his post at IDJ (more info at http://bit.ly/dUcJNX ).
We are very happy to have chosen WORLDVERSUSME for the #1 spot on the Green Washed Ritual II music compilation. WVM, from Los Angeles was chosen for their incredible artistic vision along with songs that crossed different genres such as rock, techno, industrial, alternative, etc. With over 180,000 fans across a variety of social media platforms, they have tons of great things happening for them right now. http://www.reverbnation.com/worldversusme
#2 place went to E-dubble
E-dubble has a smooth rap style, great story-telling and a solid amount of people consistently listening to him daily. He is represented by Black Paisley Records in Baltimore. http://www.reverbnation.com/e-dubble#!/edubble
In addition to these great musical acts, we decided to offer 2 additional opportunities to 2 more bands that were very well received from the skateboard community.
#3 – Soul Sanctuary http://www.reverbnation.com/soulsanctuary

We’ve spent an absorbant amount of time reviewing the music of over 100 artists so far that have sought out our opportunity to be featured on the Green Washed Ritual II digital music compilation with BambooSK8 – world leaders in action sports / skateboarding. We feel all artists deserve more than a simple “sorry- not chosen” so we actually spend the extra 15 minutes for each artist to provide them some constructive feedback on what we thought about their music, image, social media, profile, etc. For every 10 emails back thanking us, there is always 1 cry-baby who can’t handle being rejected. Scroll to the bottom to see the negative responses.

Thank you for considering us and also giving us a detailed critique. We will soon be mastering the record and possibly re-mixing it a bit so it will sound more sleek. We believe our songs are already strong enough, perhaps we’ll send different ones next time. Our new record, to be released this spring, has multiple styles on it so you only heard one piece of it. Regardless, I thank you for the comments and hope to send more stuff your way in the future. _Evan of Silent Agency

Hi Geoff,
Thank you for the honest assesment. You’re right, that is a lot better than “sorry, not interested”. We’ll keep at it, and with help like yours, things get that much easier. Best Regards, Alan LaFranchi Merrimack Delta Dub Set

Thanks for your comments, I thought the ratings you gave to my song were more than I expected and very fair. I know I should try harder but confess I am a better guitar player than singer and need help to produce the sound quality. I have a pro guy coming on board so hope you like the next one a little more. Many thanks, Mama Paula.

Hey Geoff,
Thanks for taking the time to at least listen to our stuff, and for the feedback – we gladly take all forms of criticism on board ![]()
We’re working on some new recordings at the moment, so I’ll be sure to pass this on to the rest of the guys so we can work on our songwriting as well as the recording/mixing (we’re doing it in my garage, again).
I actually hadn’t heard of getgreenmusic.org, so I’ll be sure to check that out too – cheers for the tip.
Thanks again, and I hope you guys do well with the compilation. Cheers, Tony

Mr. Geoff,
THANK YOU so much for responding to my submission with such a personal assessment! I’m truly grateful for the high ranks and suggestions to improve. I’m a solo artist with limited recording/mixing abilities. I dont have the necessary equipment/ time to do my artistic expression properly. I create what I can when I can having fun along the way! Again, thank you for your time and honest input on my music and how to improve it next time.I will definitely add/follow you to keep an industry connection. Your message has given me renewed desire to strive for better and not settle…thank you! Rich Ireland

Hi there. Thank you very much for your honesty and your opinions. They are highly valued.
If anything your criticisms confirm what we already know (which is good as we are aiming to fix these issues) and it’s also great to hear about the things you think we’re doing well. Thanks again for the suggestions and the advice. Best wishes, Kick-Ass Trainers

THE NEGATIVE & UGLY RESPONSES:
Now, we want to talk a little about the negative responses we get from just a few whiney artists who couldn’t handle the constructive feedback because we feel there are important lessons to learn for all of you reading this blog.
First of all, here’s the initial feedback that is given to each artist after we’ve reviewed their music.
Simple reply:
Thanks for your submission. We appreciate hearing from you, but have chosen not to work with you at this time simply because it’s not the right fit for this compilation. If all you wanted was a “yes” or “no” – then stop now and don’t read any further. For all others who can handle constructive feedback; go on.
Detailed reply:
Despite not being selected for the Green Washed Ritual II compilation we want to provide you as much feedback as we can to assist you and do it with the best intentions to help your music career. You deserve more than just a simple “sorry, not interested” like most companies do. We hope you value the extra time we took to provide as much detail as we can, as each of these responses is personalized.
Understand, we are only one critic so take what you can from it and never forget that your music is touching someone’s spirit including your own. If you do not agree with our review, that’s fine, but no need to be negative and email us back whining about it. The answer would still be “no”, respectfully.
Secondly, as you can see – what good does it do to write back and complain about 1 persons critique of your music. At the end of the day, if your fans are buying your records, coming to your shows, etc. – that’s all that matters. More so, what good does it do to write back hateful messages when someone took the time and energy to care about you and your musical aspirations. There is enough venom in the world… so don’t contribute more. So you weren’t chosen, move on.
Third, if you don’t have the backbone to absorb constructive feedback, then this is definitely not the right industry for you. Not everyone is going to like your music, so accept it. Continue to believe in yourself, but void your ego. If you are hearing the same reponses over and over, it’s time to listen to what people are saying. I remember when my band was getting bad feedback and it angred us. Then one day, we decided to make changes and before long, we had more fans at the shows and more shows – nearly 200 per year.
Fourth thing is that we learn more about a person in how they deal with issues, in this case, the response to the constructive feedback. When you write back negative emotions, you start to chip away at the trust that is needed in a working relationship. The point is that you should never ever step on someones toes, because you never know who can help you down the road. If you burn that bridge per se, you will most definitely lose out on opportunities. For example, not getting put on our newsletter or adding us on twitter; where tons of opportunities are listed! Always be kind to people and recognize that emails are bland – so don’t take things for face value that someone is trying to hurt your feelings. We are nice people, as most people are - who care!
Here’s a few of the negative responses, which were distasteful and out of line:
Note – this band loved to talk about all the beer they drink and how punk rock they are.
Date: 01/20/2011 11:39 AM
Come see us live you fuckin pussy.

Note – this band we told them we didn’t like their lyrics for use of the N-word.

Here’s an example of someone who later apologized, which showed great character:
Date: 01/20/2011 3:10 PM
I’m sorry, I was being flippant but I didn’t mean any disrespect. I do value your opinion and your critique and take everything you said as honest criticism that can only help improve my music. But that statement truly did cause me to laugh because the two things that artists, fans, radio stations and podcasts agree on are that my music is unique and that the musicianship is exceptional. This is feedback that I’ve literally received hundreds of times, unsolicited. You don’t have to take my word for it, if you read the comments people leave you’ll see for yourself.
I can’t truly be objective about my music, but I’m a programmer with a market research background, so I paid for a study on Jango which backs up the idea that those two qualities are strongly present in my music. Having said that let me emphasize that I don’t have an inflated view of my skills as a musician. I’m a programmer, not a professional musician, and there’s a reason for that.
However, I do hear alot of metal, and the combination of tribal and rock drums, the mix of eastern harmonic minor and classical dorian riffs, and guitars so psychedelic most people think they’re keyboards, that is a fairly unique blend. The odd-metered work in Gravity is not common, which is why it appeals to jazz-fusion folks. And The Turk constantly wins high praise for its originality and creative vision.
In the aggregate, I’ve also delivered something that stands apart from the crowd, a unique blend. Mixing in the metal with Latin-inflected folk with a droning trance beat and an acoustic round for two guitars is not something that I’ve seen before on an album, and based on my fan comments and cross-genre appeal it’s been well-received despite the lack of genre alignment.
As for musicianship, I know I’m a lousy singer so you don’t need to convince me. But I’ve been getting glowing accolades for my technical skill, and if you listen to the solo work in The Turk or Gravity you’ll see why. If those don’t convince you then I can’t ever convince you because that’s about the best I can do.
Once again I apologize for coming off rude. That’s a poor reflection on me and not at all accurate. I don’t take any of this very seriously compared to work and family, but I should have taken the time to formulate a cogent response rather than something flippant, because I truly do value your feedback. It’s only from the reactions of people that don’t like my music that I can figure out how to broaden the appeal, and I don’t take any of this too personally. Best regards, Matthew

There has been a tremendous amount of activity and movement within the A&R community over the last two months. Alex Luke and Michael Howe both join Dan McCarroll’s West Coast A&R team at Capitol while writer/producer Mike Elizondo joins Rob Cavallo’s A&R team at Warner Bros. The other addition to the Warner Bros. A&R team is former Jive A&R veteran Jeff Fenster who is returning to Los Angeles after nearly two decades in New York. Two additional transplants from NYC to LA are former J/Arista Sony Executive Larry Jackson who joins Jimmy Iovine’s team at Interscope and Atlantic’s Sam Riback who moves to the LA office. Meanwhile in NY, Adonis Sutherin joins Jive, Steve Lunt exists Atlantic and Ian Dench exists Epic. Longtime Motown A&R executive Lionel ‘KK’ Rosemond leaves to join indie powerhouse label E1 while in the UK, Mercury A&R executive Thomas Haimovici leaves to join the Warner Bros.-UK team.
Looking back at the activity within the A&R/Record Label community this past year, only twenty-three A&R executives were hired in 2010 and only two of those (Mark Williams and Vlad Bar) had ever been in A&R executive jobs before. Compare the twenty-three hired in 2010 to the fifty-eight hired in 2009 or the eighty hired in 2007! Only ten A&R executives in 2010 (compared to fourteen in 2009) were fortunate to leave one A&R job for another. That list includes Jeff Fenster, Larry Jackson, Michael Howe, Chris Anakute, Lionel ‘KK’ Rosemond, Thomas Haimovici, Qiana Conley, Lindsey Cook, Dan McCarroll and Gary Overton (while Dan McCarroll and Gary Overton are the Presidents of Capitol and Sony Music Nashville respectively and are not A&R executives per se, we’re including them because of their leadership role in driving their label’s creative departments and Conley is included since she joins Simon Cowell’s SYCO in an A&R capacity from her creative position at Notting Hill Music Publishing).
Sadly, there were 40 A&R executives who exited their A&R positions in 2010 and not one of them has landed another job in the A&R field (we’re including the three Major Label Presidents who have exited from their jobs since October: Tom Whalley from Warner Bros., Amanda Ghost from Epic, and Rob Stevenson from Virgin). While forty exits from A&R in 2010 was less than the fifty-one exits in 2009, the sixty-four A&R exits in 2008 or the one-hundred, twenty nine who exited in 2007, we’re still moved by the sheer numbers and the loss of talent our industry has endured over the last several years. And as we head into 2011, it’s with a sense of sadness that for all intents & purposes EMI will most likely be sold or closed (of course, we realize we’ve been saying this for the last two years). If and when this legendary label falls, it will mean the record industry as we knew it has shrunk by 50% over the last decade. But, the reassuring and enduring aspect of the Music Industry is that it continues to be filled with visionaries, forward-thinkers and immense talent that will always find a way to prevail, inspire and entertain.
1/11/11 - Reverbnation featured our opportunity for 2 artists to be selected and featured on the Green Washed Ritual II; a digital music compilation that will be distributed by BambooSK8. Congrats to Cherri Bomb who is signing with Hollywood Records and have many amazing things happening in 2011. What’s their key to success? A great production team and manager, hard work ethic, passion, good songs, great look… and being prepared for every opportunity and challenge. Out of Step Entertainment is incredibly proud of these girls.

The power of persuasion is a valuable tool. Teagan Stedman, founder of the nonprofit Shred Kids’ Cancer, managed to convince legendary guitarist Slash to perform at the Rock Nation Monster Showcase The Highlands in Hollywood on Saturday, December 11, 2010. The proceeds from the show will be donated to the charity.
Where do I even begin? 99% of you already know of Pink Floyd’s classic “the Wall” – written predominantly by 67 year old Roger Waters. Fast forward 30+ years, add a 200′ wide x 30′ tall set of bricks, pyrotechnics, animation, digital HD projections (which took thousands of hours to construct), a flying blimp pig, 30′ tall inflatable teacher, an airplane that crashes and blows up into a fireball, etc. – welcome to the 2010 version of the WALL. BRILLIANT AND GENIUS!!! $60 million to construct this…and the tour will likely end up making over $200 million, not including merchandising. My $250 ticket was worth every single penny!!
All I can say is thank you Pink Floyd for writing some of the greatest, timeless music we’ve ever heard… 200+ million records sold

Cherri Bomb signs with Hollywood powerhouse Creative Artist Agency (CAA) and is now represented by Michelle Jubelirer with the law firm of KING, HOLMES, PATERNO.
What an awesome kick off of the Sunset Strip Music Festival… 13 year old rockers Cherri Bomb tearing up the Roxy with their own original songs and a few covers of the Foo Fighters, Doxy and Ana Lovelis songs. Rocks next generation opened up for Filter (hey man nice shot….) but earlier in the night got to walk the red carpet at the House of Blues for the tribute to Slash, who was recognized for his 20+ years on the strip made famous during the time with Guns and Roses. The Smashing Pumpkins will headline this weekends festival.
I can’t say enough positive things about these girls and I’m truly happy to help them with their career. They have a solid team behind them, a little funding for the 4 billboards in Hollywood and tons of music industry folks asking a lot of questions. Most importantly though – they have a work ethic that is unmatched and a desire to truly craft brilliant songs that will hopefully change a generation. It’s nice to see young girls making a dent in music and not sitting around playing guitar hero or rock band but actually playing their instruments and inspiring others to do the same. Schecter guitars are a new sponsor!!
On Wednesday, their video “spin” had 5372 views. We at Out Of Step Entertainment thought, hmmm…. let us see if we can help grow the exposure so we pumped it through our social media channels of twitter, facebook, stumbleupon hookit and many more. Within 2 hours, it was up to 12,000 and by the end of the day near 20,000. 24 hours later- 59,000 views and growing. Now, it’s never just one person who can take credit for success like this, especially as these young girls have 4 billboards in Hollywood right now, as well as the mere fact that they are simply talented and that speaks for itself. Do you think most bands would invest like that? Only those who are serious would… which is the difference in why these young girls are being highly sought after by lawyers, major labels, etc. We are excited to assist and will keep the strategy growing with their parents/managers to bring about rocks new generation.
If you believe in the power of music and that music can change the world, then I ask each of you to truly pass this video onto others. There is simply no other band like these young girls – especially ones that aren’t buying into the whole DISNEY model of success or Justin Bieber-styled success. Okay, we like his hair!!
Out of Step Entertainment is ready to be represented at this summers Vans Warped Tour to promote the GREEN WASHED RITUAL music compilation. We’ve been reviewing hundreds of bands for this new compilation and thus far, we’ve only selected 1 who we will announce soon, and possibly a 2nd from sonicbids.com We’ll likely bring back a few of the bands who we highly respect from the 1st compilation – like Rebelution, Slightly Stoopid and Pepper.
Look for BambooSK8/Concrete Wave booth at the 43 dates of the summer concert – Warped tour – stop by and check out the bamboo skateboards, organic tshirts and other goodies that will be given out. Most importantly is picking up a postcard which gives you access to all the songs from the compilation. Be sure to support the passport program at the event and support the non-profits please!! We collectively can change the world!!
Out of Step Entertainment and BambooSK8 are pleased to announce their 2nd digital compilation: The Green Washed Ritual II. It again merges major label acts, independent label acts, as well as regular folks who just want to put out great music including 1 chosen Sonicbids winner. Last year, Avery Watts, who is represented by Papillon Entertainment was chosen among hundreds of artists for this slot.
Distribution will take place at the various events associated with the presenters across the country, but not limited to the X-games, Vans Warped Tour, Malouf Money cup, ASEC, Tampa AM, Action Sports Retail, as well as the many digital and viral efforts via the Internet. To start, 25,000 collective series digital download cards will be given out with each skateboard sold by BambooSK8, up to 100,000. This compilation was the first of its kind and reached millions of action sports and music fans.
A few of the bands included last year were: Medina Lake (Roadrunner), Ana Lovelis (DKE), Story of the Year (Epitaph), Arthur Autumn (Out of Step), Slightly Stoopid (Law) and It dies today (New World). Check out http://www.bamboosk8.com/misc/music.php
Submissions are open to a variety of genres including: Rock, Alt. Rock, Acoustic Rock, Pop, Jazz, Blues, Folk, Alt. Country, Classical, World, Reggae, Metal, Rap and Hip Hop, etc. Ultimately, we are looking for something incredibly creative and fresh sounding.

Lots of A&R personnel moves to report: fourteen A&R Executives left their jobs within the last eight weeks while only five new A&R Execs were hired. Among the transitions were Shawn Barron (Atlantic), Steve Allen, Ben Durling and Bill Holland (Warner Bros.), Sam Mumford (RCA), Ericka Grayson (A&M), Durius Jones (Capitol), David Wright and Angelo Sanders (Def Jam) and Jamie Nelson (Mercury).

My other company Bamboosk8 contributed some charitable goods that went directly to the LAYN organization kids at the shelters and some stuff for the celebrity gift bags - check out www.layn.org for more on helping out kids who have been abandoned by their families and need hope. We also gave 2 bamboo skate decks to Slash for his kids!!
What a spectacular night of rock star celebrities coming all together to help out this wonderful cause. Imagine if you can, Slash on guitar with Dave Navarro from Janes Addiction, Travis Barker of Blink 182 on drums, Duff from GnR/Velvet Revolver on bass, Ozzy Osbourne singing, Billy Idol singing, Chester from Linkin Park singing, Andrew from Wolfmother singing, Tom Morello on guitar, Perry Farrel of Janes Addiction singing, Steven Adler from Guns and Roses fame on drums, and many more… a mixture of covers from Led Zepplin to Black Sabbath to Janes Addiction. Wow! The event was hosted by George Lopez, who was incredibly funny. I wish I could tell you all the hilarious dirty jokes he said, but this wouldn’t be the forum for that. Another funny moment was when Slash’s wife and one of the kids was on stage asking people to text to LAYN to donate $10 and not too many people were dialing, so the kid grabs the mic and say’s, “start texting mother fr’s.” The crowd just erupted in laughter and finally pulled out their phones. The event was hosted at Avalon in Hollywood on Vine Street – across from Capitol Records building. It started out with each of the celebrities doing the red carpet horse and poney show for all the TV cameras and other press before going in and rocking out. I was fortunate to meet up again with some of my guitar heroes – Dave Navarro of Janes Addiction (who is never that friendly to strangers with his “I’m too cool for the world attitude”) and Tom Morello of Rage against the Machine (who is always super cool). The silent auction involved a variety of items up for auction including a really great one in my opinion – Anthony Keidis donated his 4x gold Canadian (4 million copies) certification and autographed it. It was a huge framed item that I believe only went for $600. Other items included autographed guitars, bamboo stuff, vacations, etc. Tickets for this event ranged from $85-500 for the VIP experience, with around 800+ tickets sold. Thank you Fez for making it happen!!
So where do I begin when it comes to the music? I’m a huge music fan…
I will start off by saying this – OZZY Osbourne takes it to mach 10 within 3 seconds of getting on the stage and the crowd just couldn’t keep up. His pitch was still relatively well but its his passion that just wreaks havoc on the crowd considering his age and mental state (?) – he comes alive like a little kid with eyes that just possess you. It was awesome!! Billy Idol was rocking hard as the crowd chanted “Rebel Yell” – always great to see him; I hope he never lets that punk attitude die. Watching the chemistry of Perry Farrell and Dave Navarro as they did “mountain song” and “jane says” was memorable, as it always is to see them connect again. Andrew from Wolfmother – what a voice; enough said! They covered Wolfmothers hit “woman”…which is so Led Zepplin but still so cool. Chester from Lincoln Park – hits some high notes but not that impressed overall – granted, he just flew in from France, so I got to give him cred. Tom Morello on guitar – who else can scratch a guitar with metal and make you hum along to it? Always great to see Tom, who is incredibly upbeat and even watching him from the side of the stage – he was so into watching Billy Idol and Ozzy…feeling every bit of the emotions put out. I can remember seeing Rage Against the Machine in 1992 with House of Pain in Detroit – I knew it wouldn’t be long before they took over the world. I then attended about 7 more shows over the years until they split, then came back, then split, then came back. Travis Barker – this dude is sick… he played 90% of the night with 110% – seriously, he’s one of the best drummers out there and always a super cool guy with no ego. I had just saw Travis a few weeks back at the Tony Hawk charity event in Beverly Hills. Duff from GnR fame… always keeping the groove locked down. Even GnR’s Steven Adler came out to hit the skins as they covered “Paradise city”.
The night ended around 11:30 to all of the celeb’s being bombarded by paparazii outside of the venue… thankfully no one got hurt.
Great job Slash, LAYN, Fez, and others involved!!!! May this money donated multiply in blessings for children in need.

After attending the group Y conference for action sports at the Home Depot Center from 8am-3pm, I headed over to the X-games at the Staples Center to watch the mega ramp event at 6pm, in which Jake Brown won – beating out defending 2x back-to-back champion Bob Burnquist. Around 8:45pm, I walked across the street for the red carpet ceremony of the releasing of the X-games 3D movie at the Nokia Theatre. A wide variety of celebrities (Pamela Anderson for one) and action sports athletes (Shaun White, Andy Macdonald, Kevin Robinson) and business folks were in attendance. I took my intern Shawn with me and we rolled down the red carpet like rock stars as people stared like “who the hell are these guys?” Here’s a photo with Slash.

Out of Step Entertainment made the trek from LA out to the sunny desert of Indio for an action packed Coachella on Sunday. This was the 2nd largest Coachella with 188,000 fans. Highlight for me as always is seeing the Cure, who headlined (2nd time at Coachella) and performed almost 1 hour past the curfew of midnight costing Coachella $1000/minute. For those who know the Cure, the Cure don’t even get warmed up to literally after 2 hours of playing; seasoned veterans. Other highlights was seeing Public Enemy, the Orb, Perry Farrell (only veteran to play all 10 coachellas), X, Brian Jonestown Massacre, Yeah Yeah Yeahs, My Bloody Valentine, and many more. Many art installations were found throughout the polo fields, many of which can be found at Burningman. The Do Lab did a wonderful job of spraying people down with cold water and providing top notch beats. Looking forward to next year…
